El Cerrito
Once a bawdy saloon and dog racing town named
"Rust", this quiet "city of homes" is now better known for it's terrific
bay views and easy commute to the City. There are two BART stations in
El Cerrito, direct bus lines to downtown and easy freeway access. El Cerrito
has great public parks, a swimming and recreation center, library, the
Mira Vista Golf and Country Club and is home to the Contra Costa Community
Theater. A farmers market is held twice a week at the El Cerrito Plaza,
currently in the planning stages of a major restoration. As of 1997, the
population was 23,278. El Cerrito schools are in the West Contra
Costa Unified School District and include a junior high and El Cerrito
High school, which is known for sending many students on to top-notch colleges.
There are two Catholic schools, a Jewish school and several other well
respected private schools.
El Cerrito has long beena popular place to buy a home for those looking for a something more affordable
than they can find in Berkeley, while still remaining close to the University
and Berkeleyís unique shopping districts, arts and restaurants.
